Meeting November 26, 2007

Our next meeting will be at 6:45PM at the MAAC Charter School at 1385 Third Ave. (between Palomar and Quintard, east side of street) on MONDAY.  This will be a presentation and a discussion about: DO YOU WANT THE CHARGERS IN CHULA VISTA?

Patty Chavez of Southbay Community Services has asked us to consider collecting canned food, socks, pencils, etc. at our meetings for the residents of the foster children’s, homeless teens’, homeless families’, and battered women’s shelters they run. They also feed many low-income seniors and the homeless on Wednesday. I told her we would do this for our November meeting. I also said we would adopt a family from the Battered women’s shelter for Christmas. Their wish list is

Mom: purse, wallet
Child:
Female age 13: jeans size 12/14; t-shirts; earrings of animals; shoes size 6 1/2
Child: Female age 11: Jeans size 12. Monopoly game; shoes (flats) color gold size 1.
SBCS is also accepting the following items this holiday season:
Turkey Drive:
Turkey meals for the holidays are needed for our various families, seniors and foster youth.  We would gladly accept turkeys,
hams, pies, gift certificates or free turkey coupons from grocery stores.
Canned Food

During the holidays and throughout the year, we are in

need of food supplies for our families in shelters and individuals who
take part in our weekly meal programs.  All canned foods are accepted.
Linens: New Blankets, sheets & towels are in big request from most families
New Undergarments for children and youth.

As you can see the needs are great yet small things like pencils and socks would be useful and appreciated. Please help if you can.

Bayvista Walk

has been postponed at the request of the developer. We still have the issue that the community of Palomar Gateway wants a voice in a specific plan before any more development takes place here. We will vote on supporting them in their request.

Peaker Power Plant

There is a 44.5 Mw plant now at the end of Albany near the Otay River. It is dirty and inefficient so rarely operates. MMC power has an option to buy it and wants to expand it to 100mw and operate it for up to 2,000 hours or more a year. This is not appropriate 350 feet from homes and within 1500 feet of an elementary school, HeadStart, Recreation Center and Senior lunch site. We will vote on an official position Thursday.

Infrastructure

City engineer asks that all potholes be reported to 397-6000.

Mobile Home and Trailer Park News

6 advocates will be meeting with Congressman Filner and the State ombusman for Mobile Home Parks on November 27 at 4PM. One issue will be vagueness of existing laws and another is 3% loans state apparently has to help residents buy their parks. Also a revisit of pilot project for Section 8. We will ask Congressman Filner to please try to get bill passed so that forever section 8 payments can go directly to mobile home owner instead of park owner. If you have other issues please get them to me ASAP.
