Meeting: Monday, May 19,
2008
Our next meeting will be at 6:45PM
Monday at the MAAC
Charter School at 1385 Third Ave. (between Palomar and Quintard, east side of
street) on MONDAY. There will be a general discussion of
matters brought up by attendees followed by a half hour presentation about the
water crisis and how we can conserve by Sue Mosburg, the Conservation Program
Supervisor for the Sweetwater Authority.
Please come and bring a friend or
neighbor. If you have nor renewed your membership, please do so. We need all
donations, including memberships to pay for fliers and newsletters. Donations
are deductible to full extent allowed by law: We have our 501c3 status.
Our tax # is 61-1517022.
Bayvista Walk (The condominium project proposed
for Palomar between Frontage and Industrial) has been dropped due to the
economy. The Olsen Company has cut most of its staff and given up its option to
buy. I am told that another group is trying to negotiate a reduced price with
the owners (a Danish group). If they acquire the land they don’t expect to be
bringing forth a proposal for at least five years-due to the economy.
Peaker Power Plant
There is a 44.5 Mw plant now at the
end of Albany near the Otay River. MMC Energy bought it and wants to expand it
to 100 mw and operate it for 800 or more hours a year. This is not appropriate
350 feet from homes and within 1300 feet of an elementary school, HeadStart,
Recreation Center and Senior lunch site. We took a position opposing this
expansion. Thank-you to our 7 members who joined the over 150 protestors on
May12 at a meeting of the California Energy Commission staff. WE NEED A LOT OF PEOPLE TO SHOW UP AT THE COUNCIL MEETING
AT 6PM ON MAY 27 (F & 4th Ave.). We need to convince the council to join us in protesting
this non-conforming, inappropriate land use.
Businesses
We are getting more people to join
our business committee, because Code Enforcement has been hassling long time
businesses. Assistant Manager Brad Remp has said the city wants to phase out
the Used Car Lots and other non-conforming uses so they will not allow them to
fix up their places. This really makes no sense since the alternative to
getting tax money, jobs, and services from these businesses is more empty lots
on Main Street. The city needs to help all our businesses, especially in these
difficult economic times, not make things more difficult for them.
Infrastructure
City engineer asks that all potholes
be reported to 397-6000.
Graffiti hotline: 691-5198 If you see someone with paint cans or
in act of painting graffiti call 911. It is a felony.
Mobile
Home and Trailer Park News
Flamingo Trailer Park (Broadway near
H) is on the verge of closing for a 300+ condominium project. Owners have
submitted a draft relocation plan to staff. When the city attorney okays it, I
will get to see it. They have been working with people for 3 years, and the
city says it has sufficent funds to pay a rent subsidy for the 31 eligible
families for at least two years.
Next Month June 23, 2008 meeting we should have representatives from Gaylord
and the Port explaining and answering questions about the proposed
development on the Bayfront. Fly Over video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTW0hPvs2ME
