Meeting
February 22, 2007
New
Location!!!
Our next
meeting will be at 6:45 at the MAAC Charter School at 1385 Third Ave. (between Palomar and Quintard,
east side of street). During our February meeting we will
start collecting information on infrastructure problems and comments about what
should go into specific plans for the southwest. The city is not starting the
planning process, but is allowing denser development all over the Southwest. We
will discuss the Palomar Gateway area on Thursday 2/22 and a different area
each month.
The General Plan Update environmental
document says this dense development will have an adverse effect upon the
character of our community. The city is
legally obligated to try to lessen
this impact by developing specific plans and specific design guidelines.

Join us in insisting that the first
thing to go into these plans is a plan with funding for upgrading our
infrastructure. Everyone acknowledges that the infrastructure in the southwest
is below par. Obviously replacing one business with 70 or one house with 15
puts additional strain on the infrastructure and brings us closer to failure.
Drainage is a mess. Many of our streets are in very poor repair and a lot of
busy streets and streets near schools have no sidewalks. This is not the way to
promote walkable communities.
Is this what
it will take to get action?
This is the income generated
in the southwest by redevelopment and sales tax for the last two years:
Tax
Increment for Southwest - Redevelopment Agency Revenue
2005/06
$2,811,949
2004/05 $2,157,676
Sales
Tax for the Montgomery Annexation Area - City Revenue
2005/06
$3,544,001
2004/05 $3,217,950
Join us in
preparing a statement to the city insisting that this money be directed towards
infrastructure improvement projects before any new development is allowed.
John Ziebarth will present Home Depot’s
plans. This will be a chance to make it clear to him that they must keep their
trucks as far away from residences as
possible. Adjusting the hours of
delivery could be suggested as well.
Jorge Sanchez may talk about the
townhomes he is building on Ada Street.
Leah Bowder from Chula Vista Engineering will answer
questions and talk about infrastructure in the Southwest.
