Minutes of general meeting 11/23/09

Maac charter school 1385 third ave., attendance 18

 

1. Call to order by Theresa at 6:45 P.M.

2. Motion to approve minutes of 10/26/09 made by David, 2nd by Jerry, passed.

3. Motion to amend bylaws to read "The majority of members in attendance at the annual meeting will elect a board of directors for SWCVCA" made by Richard 2nd by Jerry, passed.

4. Item split into two separate motions. Motion part 1 made to oppose the city 5 year redevelopment plan section that expands redevelopment into residential areas by Earl, 2nd by Jim, passed. Motion part 2 made to support any RDA goal of rehabilitation of blighted multi-family housing within redevelopment areas using low-mod funds made by Doc, 2nd by Tom, passed.

5. Nomination of Jerry Thomas to board of directors. Vote at annual meeting.

6. Nick Aguilar gave a report on current problems at Southwest College including: Board of governors voting to award consulting contracts for development projects using approved bond funds with no discussion allowed in open meetings. Sections of this contract will certainly waste taxpayer money. Low bid not accepted with no explanation. Large cuts in classes made while maintaining reserve funds not appropriate in a down economy. SWC is not acting like students needs are a priority.

7. Jonathan Martinez from the Border Patrol spoke about the duties of agents and their mission to prevent terrorism, illegal entry,contraband, etc. Also stated that San Ysidro is busiest border crossing in the world and there are new technologies to detect tunnels and do search and rescue.

8. Cesar Luna, former undocumented immigrant and now immigration attorney spoke about applicable law and rights of immigrants. Group discussion was abundant and animated.
