SWCVCA General Meeting , June 29,2009, Attendance 21  

1. Call to order at 6:55 PM by Theresa.

2. Motion to approve minutes of May 18, 2009 made by Jim Headland Motion seconded by Jim Doud. Motion passed.

3. Theresa reported that MMC’s application to expand the peaker plant on Main Street was denied in Sacramento by the California Energy Commission (CEC) on June 17.

4. A motion was made by Willard “Doc” Howard to continue to engage in community service projects in the Southwest. Mariana Lopez amended the motion to read engage in community service projects and improve the appearance in the Southwest. Mariana Lopez  seconded the motion. Motion passed.

5. Ruth Yaconelli spoke and proposed a phone tree. After discussion a new communication and media committee was formed consisting of Ruth Yaconelli, Mariana Lopez, Harry Orgovan James Doud, Dolores Dempsey, and Willard “Doc” Howard.

6. Manuel Medrano from the City spoke about recycling and hazardous waste. Residents can take hazardous waste to 1800 Maxwell Road from 9 am to 1 pm on Wednesday and Saturday. There is a suggested $5 donation, but it is optional. The disposal limit is 15 gallons or 25 lbs. of waste. Old medicines can be dropped off at the Police Dept., but no controlled substances are accepted.  You can take fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescents to Home Depot for free disposal.

7. Hugo Salazar spoke about Communities Taking Action (CTA). He invited people to get involved in our city and to join a new 501c4 Political Action Committee on July 2 at 6 to 7:30 pm at the South Chula Vista Library. Hugo can be reached at 619-254-1261. He asked people to look up the group web site at ourcta.org.

8. Theresa made a motion that the Southwest Chula Vista Civic Association go on record as opposing the continued operation of the South Bay Power Plant (SBPP).  Motion was seconded by Ruth Yaconelli. During discussion the concern was raised about what would be located on the SBPP site if it were removed. The motion passed 11 (with one member submitting a written vote) to 2.

9.Robert Garcia spoke a about an effort to help low income residents, widows and single parents to install solar panels at reduced prices with the help of donations, electrician volunteers, paid roofers and bulk panel purchases.

10. The permit needed to sell raffle tickets to raise money at Fiesta Del Sol won’t be ready in time for the August 8-9 date. It was suggested we participate on August 9 in the Chula Vista Lemon Festival instead. Willard “Doc “ Howard was the first volunteer to work in the booth.

12. Ed Herrera spoke about the new Chula Vista Civic Association and their reform CV agenda. Their first general membership meeting will be at the City Hall council chambers on July 29 at 6 pm. All are invited. Their website is chulavistacivicassociation.org
