Southwest Civic Association Minutes     
                                General Meeting 7/27/2009 MAAC Center,

                                    attendance: 33 adults, 3 children


1. Call to order by Theresa at 6:50PM


2. Raffle tickets to fund community projects announced. Sold 32 tickets immediately.
Prizes at end of Lemon Festival 8/9 another drawing 8/31 for 10% cash prize.


3. Motion to approve minutes from June 29 made by Earl, 2nd by James, passed.


4. Laura Hunter of the Environmental Health Coalition gave a presentation on the effort to support removal of the South Bay Power Plant. 49- year old plant that discharges 1,000,000 tons of greenhouse gas a year in addition to water pollution. The ISO has declared this plant an RMR (must run) status. New power generation coming online may allow this to change. People signed postcards to RWQB requesting one-time cooling permit Not be approved. This could close the plant down early.


5.Catherine Rodman from Affordable Housing Advocates presented information on how cities shortchange funding to build required subsidized housing and handed out applications to help her in her efforts.


6. Michael Meachum, city of Chula Vista dept. of Energy and Conservation director discussed the possible locations of new power generation facilities east of 805 in Chula Vista, the planned new solar energy production on the roof of municipal buildings in Chula Vista, and the 50-100 people in CV who would get free energy upgrades from grants. Now is the time for people to get at least 5 neighbors to agree to participate. Priority for choosing homes will go to collections of homes.
