General Meeting of April 25, 2011

Call to order at 6:20 with total attendees: 18

 

1.   Motion to approve minutes of March 28 made by Richard, 2nd by Bettie, approved.

2.   Announcement of effort to bring a SWC campus to Southwest made and motion to support made by Steve, 2nd by Jerry and approved unanimously.

3.   Introduction of guest Jose Mireles representing South Bay Community Services. A community and child development team started in 1971 as “Our House” on 3rd Ave. Discussion included: 

A.   With funding from local, state and private donors their stated goal is to help families and youth reach their potential by providing respectful services.

B.  Providing aid to homeless families and some individuals by a partnership with other agencies. After a needs assessment they may issue vouchers for hotel rooms for up to 28 days at $50 a night. Homeless count in Chula Vista is 441 and some refuse to accept any aid.

4.   Introduction of guest Rosemary Johnson representing Interfaith Shelter Network on the subject of meals and shelter for the homeless.

A.   10 congregations team to provide 2 weeks of meals and shelter to families and some individuals. They provide the only winter shelter in the South Bay.

B.  Good conduct required but no drug or alcohol testing. Services provided from Nov. to April with 2 of every 5 homeless contacted not wishing assistance.
