Minutes: October 22, 2007

 

 

 

1.     Call to order: Meeting was called to order by Theresa Acerro at 6:50 p.m.

2.     Action: Doc Howard motioned to approve the minutes for the meeting of September 24, 2007. Seconded by Mary Whitiker. Motion passed.

3.     Action: Ann Storm motioned to offer free trial memberships for the remainder of the year. Seconded by Derick Dudley. Motion passed.

4.     Theresa announced that all memberships expire the day before our annual meeting, which will be Thursday, January 17, 2008. We will be renewing our memberships and voting for a board of directors at that meeting. If you are interested in running or would like to nominate someone, use the form provided at our last meeting or tell one of the present board members.

5.     Theresa introduced City Manager David Garcia. Mr. Garcia and Ed Van Eeno, Budget Director, gave a presentation on the 14 million dollar deficit in the general fund budget. He stated that the budget did not seem as bad in June, but all the foreclosures have increased the deficit. Mr. Garcia stated that the most controversial part of our financial crisis has been the conclusion that jobs must be cut. Ed Van Eeno and Mr. Garcia went on to explain the proposed budget cuts and answer questions. Mr. Garcia stated that the cuts were put together in a way that would have a minimal effect on public safety. (The powerpoint discussed can be seen at www.chulavistaissues.org)

6.     Theresa requested for all those present to please consider signing the petition about Bayvista Walk. This item was discussed and volunteers were asked to attend the Planning commission meeting and/or the CVRC meeting to voice our opinions concerning zoning changes.

7.     There was discussion about the information on the MMC Peaker Plant at the end of Albany, south of Main St. There will be an important meeting on November 29 from 2:00-5:00 with the State Energy Commission. Some of the problems discussed were: hours of operation, close proximity to residents, pollution and health issues.

8.     Action: Penny Bollinger motioned to adjourn. Seconded by Betti Lupi Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

9.     Next meeting November 24, at 6:45 at 1385 Third Ave. MAAC Charter School. Mark Fabiani and Councilman McCann will talk about the Chargers.
