GENERAL
MEETING 10/26/2009 at the MAAC CENTER, attendance 18
1. Call to order by Theresa at 6:55 p.m.
2. Motion to approve minutes from general
meeting 9/28/2009 made by Jim, 2nd by Earl, passed
3. Xinia from the Community Collaborative spoke
about the pedestrian master plan. Announcement and handout notification of 4
public open houses. Dates and locations on flyer and discussion of draft plan
items.
4. Dr. Farrah from UCSD presentation on cancer
treatment and history. Topics of interest included:
a. Earliest use of radiation
in treatment dating to 1895. Madam Curie was an early pioneer of womens cancer
research.
b. Oncology is the science
and definition of the three treatments to fight cancer including: Surgery,
Radiation and Chemotherapy.
c. The two types of patient
treatment are Curative which is eradication and Palliative which defines easing
of suffering in worse case scenarios.
d. The new cancer
treatment center at 959 Lane Ave. in Eastlake has the most advanced, state of
the art radiation machine in the region. One advance is called IMRT and is a
way to shape the dose of radiation to fit the shape of the tumor. Radio surgery
is a concentrated dose of radiation that acts like a scalpel.
e. Only 10% of lung cancer
can be cured without it metastasizing throughout the body.
